Acting Chops Penn proves once again with milk Sean Penn is known for its incredible range of quality, capable of representing a wide variety of characters with ease, skill and heart. From the quintessential surfer dude Jeff Spicoli, stoner in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, racist murderer Matthew Poncelet in Dead Man Walking, the mentally handicapped father Sam Dawson in I Am Sam, Penn can take any character. His last role as a leader in Gus Van Sant's Milk is no doubt as powerful as all his previous work.
Milk is a biopic on Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to a very public in the U.S., joining the San Francisco Advisory Board in 1978. He was assassinated just 10 months since taking office by Dan White, a member of the board who also assassinated Mayor George Moscone of San Francisco a few moments before.
inheritance of milk is one that remains very relevant today, echoing this year's historical and political "front" with the presidential victory of Barack Obama, and the current controversy behind the recent passage of Proposition 8, to California anti-gay marriage. Considering the weight of the role of Harvey Milk should include the actor, it seems that much had been asked to Penn. Not surprisingly, though, the man made spectacular.
Taking a surprisingly sharp focus, Long Island, Penn lives and breathes the character Harvey Milk. Her other ways, such as posture and facial expressions not only bring the character to life, but also avoid being insulting or stereotypical portrait of homosexual men.
Penn is playing alongside some of the equally talented actors of the new generation. James Franco and Diego Luna men play in the life of milk with the same talent that Penn. Director Van Sant, of course, also shines in this masterpiece. From indie flicks like My Own Private Idaho for more mainstream fare like Good Will Hunting, Van Sant himself has a knack for taking on powerful subjects and portray them with skill and sensitivity. It avoids the milk to be a great man or untouchable, divine hero, but rather focuses more on the man and his mission confirmed.
