Point Reyes CheeseTour of California using your tastebuds

Food can make or break a trip. What if you had a site that might show you which foods are produced locally, and lists the hits you can take it while you're in the area?

As you travel throughout California, there is no shortage of local and locally produced products for the home and maintaining a Web site can steer you in the right direction. SavorCalifornia.com is a new website that offers relatively stopover visitors only resource to learn "what is good, which is what in fact and where to find it," according to site founder, Jane St. Claire.

The site focuses on various specialty food producers in California, and places that offer profiles for companies in several regions of the state. About a year and a half, the site now offers 80 different producers, many of them in Northern California and the Los Angeles area. More are added all the time, according to St. Clair, who spends a good amount of time traveling the state in search of just the right food for their website.

"I go to food markets looking for products that may be local in this region," said St. Clair. "And I'm going to food shows and fairs where I can really enjoy the product without telling anyone what I do. I can also hear what others say. "

When she takes a lead on a good product to local production, St. Clair turns into a private detective. It checks the website of the company, focuses on product distribution and retail locations and generally does everything his ear to the ground to learn everything she can about the product before finally contacting the producer on the inclusion on its website. Do not get me wrong, St. Clair loads only the producer or on the site - but she said she is picky about who she asked to be on the site.

The result is an extraordinary range of producers in California with products ranging from olives to fish honey buns. The products should not necessarily be natural and good for you - there are many bakeries and brewpubs to the rest of us happy. All these foods are high quality, produced in California - and many of them have a contractor to the head which has made the product a success.

The site allows visitors to search a certain product types or for a list of products by region. Each producer of specialty foods has a page with their story, as well as information about specific products. Sidebars are updated periodically to include recipes, serving suggestions, events and seasonal specialties. It'll be a while before you can travel, no need to wait - the site will also give you the ordering information so that you can have the product shipped.

St. Clare had the idea for the site, while working in the wine industry in Northern California, planning wine tastings. She often invites producers to bring their products to its events. "That's how I became familiar with most food producers in California. I thought they were good to do everything they did, but they were not very good at marketing. I I created the website to let more people know about these great products. "

The current site has a lot of emphasis on the Sonoma County, home of St. Clair, and so we asked St. Claire for a suggested route we could follow on our next trip to Northern California and did not slow to impose. The following is the recommendation of a kind of food tour of the north coast of California, make your way to North Point Reyes Station in Eureka.

Point Reyes Station - This charming little town a few miles from the incredible beauty of Point Reyes National Seashore, is also the home of the Bovine Bakery and its famous buns. There are lots of pastries offered as well as others.
