Tobacco smoke has many toxic chemicals that can affect both smokers and nonsmokers. What are these substances? Here's a short list of chemicals taken from "The Book of Lists # 2" by Irving Wallace, David Wallechinsky, Amy Wallace, Sylvia Wallace

Acrolein - a toxic, colorless with irritating fumes.

The carbon monoxide - a tasteless, odorless gas that deprives tissues of oxygen invigorating. It's the same foul your car exhaust emits.

Ammonia - a gaseous compound used in the manufacture of explosives and disinfectants. It is irritating to eyes and mucous membranes and can cause burns and blistering.

The formic acid - a colorless, pungent and highly corrosive used in the treatment of textiles and leather. Exposure to acid causes blisters and irritates the mucous membranes. Cancer has been reported in laboratory animals.

Hydrogen cyanide - a highly toxic liquid used in some countries in executing criminals.

Formaldehyde - a colorless gas used in nail hardeners, nail polish and shampoos in spite of its toxic effects. Indigestion can cause severe abdominal pain, internal bleeding, dizziness, coma and death. Can react with other chemicals to produce mutagenic and carcinogenic.

Phenol - used in creams, shaving lotions, and other commercial products, even after many cases of poisoning have been reported. Smaller quantities can result in nausea, vomiting, paralysis and convulsions.

Acetaldehyde - a flammable liquid used in the manufacture of perfumes. It occurs naturally in apples, broccoli, cheese and other vegetables. It can irritate eyes and mucous membranes, increased blood pressure and reduce the number of red and white. High doses can cause death by respiratory paralysis.

Arsenic - a highly toxic compound that causes nausea, vomiting, and death.

After reading about these dangerous chemicals contained in cigarettes, some smokers may switch to brands with lower tar, thinking they can reduce or avoid the harmful effects of tobacco this way.

Unfortunately, this strategy will not work. Although the average tar and nicotine cigarettes have been reduced over the past 30 years, there is still no such thing as a safe cigarette. The transition to a low-yield brand is simply not the answer. (Next: Diseases of smoking.)
