Yogurt CoveredNutty Guys voluntary recall of peanut butter caramel and yogurt covered peanuts

Guys is recalling its Nutty Peanut Butter and Caramel Yogurt Covered Peanuts, after discovering insects in certain products. About 2,000 pounds of peanuts were sold. It is a Class III recall, considered likely to cause adverse health consequences, and not to be confused with the recent peanuts and peanut products recalls associated with contamination by Salmonella.

Identify the Recalled Peanut Products

Nutty Guys products are sold online at Nutty Guys, other sources online and in stores across the country. Both products were recalled peanut sold from March 15, 2010 and earlier, and both are packaged in a book, see-through, plastic bags. varieties are being recalled:

  • Peanut butter caramel, UPC 8 31852 00261 0
  • Yogurt Peanuts, UPC 8 31852 00279 5

The problem with peanut products affected

The defective peanut products have been recalled because they might contain live insects and larvae. The insects are a common problem in peanuts and are not considered a serious threat to health.

This recall is not related to peanuts and other peanut products in recent recalls due to contamination with Salmonella. It is not related to the recall of 2009 Nutty Guys pistachios because of possible Salmonella contamination.

What should you do if you recall peanut products

If you have peanut butter caramel or yogurt Covered Peanuts that you think are included in the recall do not eat them. You can contact Nutty Guys for instructions on how to obtain a refund.

Bugs in Food

Live bugs are not uncommon in foods such as cereals, nuts and other dry goods. They are often a problem for those who store food for long periods of time at home. Most do not pose a health risk, but some insects found in food, such as carpet beetles, can cause an allergic reaction or irritation.

The press release Nutty Guys do not specify what type of insects have been found. Indian moths are a type of insect that is often found in nuts. There are methods available to help keep bugs in nuts, but most of these methods have potential health risks of their own or can reduce nut quality. Some methods:

  • chemical fumigation
  • microwave radiation
  • Radiofrequency treatment
  • Ionizing radiation
  • Cold treatment
